If you use Codex regularly, you quickly build up a complete local workspace containing projects, chats, skills, settings and other data. Codex Lifeboat was created to make it easy to back up, restore or migrate that environment to another Windows PC.
The tool creates a portable backup of your Codex environment, including projects, local conversations, skills and relevant configuration. Project data such as .git directories, .env files and uncommitted changes can also be included.
Backups are verified using SHA-256 hashes, helping detect corrupted or modified files. During a restore, Codex Lifeboat compares existing data with the backup and handles potential conflicts in a controlled way.
Restore safety is an important part of the application. A recovery copy is created before changes are applied, making it possible to roll back if something goes wrong. Projects that only exist on the destination computer are preserved by default.
When is Codex Lifeboat useful?
Codex Lifeboat is particularly useful when you want to:
- move to a new PC;
- create regular backups of your Codex workspace;
- transfer projects and conversations between computers;
- quickly recover after a Windows or Codex-related problem.
The Windows version is portable: extract it and run it. No separate Python installation is required.
Codex Lifeboat is open source and available on GitHub.
